The following experiments were performed for evaluating the reproductive response of female and male fish’s matured in confinement when stimulated by abrupt changes in the electrical conductivity of water. Treatment 0 (T0) consisted of controlling or maintaining electrical conductivity regarding the values at which the fish mature sexually (100 µS / cm). The water in the containers in treatments 1 to 5 had electrical conductivity below that of control, as follows: T1 = 10 µS / cm, T2 = 20 µS / cm, T3 = 40 µS / cm, T4 = 60 µS / cm; T5 = 80 µS / cm. Contrary to above, water in treatments 6 to 9 was kept at conductivities higher than those of the control, as follows: T6: 120 µS/cm; T7: 140 µS/cm and T8: 160 µS/cm. Each treatment having six replicates and each replicate were performed in a 40 L aquarium containing a nest made out of 20 cm long 1½’ PVC pipe, having a closed end and positioned perpendicularly in the tank. One female (7±0.2g weight, 8±0.2 cm total length) and one male (10.7±0.3 g weight and 14.1±0.2 cm total length) were placed in each replica. The stimulus was applied by moving abruptly keeping each couple in each treatment’s experimental conditions for five days.Spawning responses occurred at 24.6±1.3 h at 26.5±0.4°C. T5 (66.7 %) was the treatment having the highest spawning response (p < 0.05), being greater than and different to T4 (33.3 %) and T0, T2 and T3 (16.7 %); there was no response in the other treatments. Reproductive fertility was between 75 and 92 eggs/female with 93-99 % fertility and 101.8±4.3 h incubation time. Keywords: Ancistrus triradiatus, electrical conductivity, environmental stimuli, spawning, xénocara.spa
