This experiment with red tilapia (Oreochromis sp) was carried out in order to determine the effect of temperature, body weight, and dietary protein levels on basal and total ammonium excretion rates. To determine the basal ammonium a fully random design with a factorial arrangement 2 X 3 (three replicates) was applied. The first factor was temperature (26 and 30 oC) and the second was fish body weight (100, 250 and 500g). A factorial design A x B x C being factor A= fish body weight (100, 250 and 500g), B= protein levels (25.6, 30.5 and 35% CP) and C= water temperature (25 and 30 o C) was applied to quantify the total ammonium. Ammonium excretion in all three body weights of fasted specimens was significantly higher at 30 than at 26 oC. An increase in both dietary protein levels and temperature resulted in significant increases of total ammonium excretion rates (P< 0.05). Body weight showed an inverse relationship with respect to ammonium excretion rate. Fish of 100g at 26oC and a diet with a 25%-protein level, excreted 468.8 ± 2.2 g N-NH4 + day-1kg-1 , while 500g-fish on the same diet and temperature, excreted 356.3 ± 1.6 mg N- NH4 + day-1kg-1 .Red tilapia showed the higher daily ammonium excretion (post prandial pulse) at 10 - 20 h. The higher excretion is associated with fish fed on higher-level protein diets, at higher temperature and lower body weight.eng
