Black pepper, Piper nigrum, is originally from Asian forest and is an highly priced spice in the world market. In countries such as Colombia, the producers do not satisfy the domestic demand. Given the requirements of black pepper crops, the Andean foothills of Colombia could be used to produce this spice. Also, a close relationship between species of frugivorous bats the genus Carollia (family: Phyllostomidae) and Neotropical plants of the genus Piper (family: Piperaceae) has been detected. This rises the question: can pepper crops be attractive for these bats, and therefore, can they have negative effects on the crops? Carrollia bats are attracted by the essential oils of Netropical Piper. Therefore, I used optimal path use theory to evaluate the preferences of Carollia perspicillata for food with and without essential oils of black pepper. I did experiments on the campus of the Universidad de los Llanos in Villavicencio. During 21 nights, i offered the bats sucrose-water mixtures with and without of the essential oils in artificial feeders, and measured the giving up densities (GUD), i.e., the amount of food left after the bats finished foraging. The addition of the essentials oils to the food increased the bats’ GUDs, indicating that they did no perceive benefits from the presence of the essentials oils of black pepper in the food. In fact, it is possible that the bats associated the presence of the essentials oils with a toxin. Also, the effect of the essential oils on the bats’ foraging depended on the experimental night, sampling period, and foraging station. Our results suggest that C. perspicillata does not threaten potential black pepper crops in the Andean foothills.eng
