Research on silurids in Colombia, especially the Pimelodidae family, has been limited to the execution of works on aspects of their basic biology and to the development of protocols for captive-induced reproduction, leaving large gaps in incubation and larviculture. The objective of this work was to evaluate the larval development of Pimelodus blochii Valenciennes, 1840, identifying morphological changes and meristic variables during the 31 hours post hatching. A random sampling of larvae was carried out every hour, starting at hatching (0 hours post hatching "HPE") until 31 HPE. Total length (LT), notochordal length (LN), number of total myomers (NM), body height (HC), eye diameter (OD) and head length (LC) were measured and recorded. A total of 480 larvae, which hatched at 26.5 ± 0.8 ° C, pH 6.8 ± 0.4 and an oxygen concentration of 5.8 ± 0.5 mg / L were analyzed. Morphologically they were translucent, with elongated and straight body, they showed initial evidences of optic vesicle, olfactory bulb, otoliths, anus, myomers, primordial caudal fin and notochord. Measurements given from 0 HPE to 31 HPE for total length were between 2,312 + 0,18 mm a 4,342 + 0,14 mm, notochordal length between 1,872 + 0,14 a 3,945 + 0,08 mm, head length between 0,612 + 0,05 a 0,728 + 0,01 mm, eye diameter between 0,108 + 0,02 a 0,089 + 0,01mm and body height Was between 0,215 + 0,03 a 0,307+ 0,02 mm. In addition to these measurements a yolk sac volume ranging from 0,0995 to 0,2638 mm3, respectively from 0 HPE to 31 HPE, was obtained from hatching to 31 h post hatching, where the resorption was 98, 3%. However, exogenous feeding with a mouth opening of 0,408 a 0,473 mm was initiated only until 24 hrs with 88% yolk sac reabsorption and increased pigmentation of the eye. The results show the rapid larval development of P.blochii, with respect to other species of the same family, allowing to know the exact moment of the beginning of the exogenous feeding towards the 24 HPE, which makes possible the supply of adequate food (in size 448 + 18 μm And particle texture) for diminish the high mortalities that are presented at this stage.
